THRESHOLD

I stand at the threshold
between the light
and the dark.
I do not resent the sun,
its journey already begun.
I simply notice the stars.
My heart remembers
the ones who have gone
and borrows wonder
from those who’ve just arrived.
The blossom’s time has passed.
The birds have flown away.
I fill my eyes with falling leaves
and carry seeds
into the night—
I too will be changed.
Safe inside the dark,
I’ll take flight again
when this work is done.
